With the Paralympics drawing to a close in Beijing and with the stunning displays of the opening and closing ceremonies still fresh in our mind, I have dug out a few old photos of my home town Sydney during the Olympic Games in 2000. The Opera House was bathed in different colored lights each evening while the Olympic rings adorned the iconic Harbour Bridge. A few more photos with different Opera House lighting follow. The camera was balanced on a rubbish bin for most of the photos!

I never knew the opera house lit up like that at night. Ive always wanted to go to Australia...I think i might be going this summer. On a side note I found a cool site that I think you should post your pics/story its at baraaza.com

@tony: The Opera House is only lit for special occasions. They do a great job when they do it.
So many of world famous structures were initially rejected by the residents of their cities. Sydney Opera house and Eiffel Tower are two such structures. But now they have become identity for their cities.

@chris: You are exactly right. The Opera House is so valuable to Sydney now yet was roundly criticised when built 40 years ago. I guess such buildings are different and hence evoke more emotional comments than a "normal" buildling.
