Seemingly lost in medieval times, the central Black Forest town of Schiltach is a jewel of half-timbered houses. The triangular market square has the most impressive samples, some dating back to the early 1600s.

Love these wood-houses with all the wood bars criss-crossing over the white front facade!
@abhijit: I am a huge fan of the half-timbered houses too. Germany, France and Britain has many small villages with them in.
Cool! Can't wait to drive through Germany...it will be my first time in the country!
@sherry: Geez, I hope you have time to slow down and check out some of Germany's great scenery, history and culture in your venture to Mongolia.
Duh, they look so German!
Nice and comfy too, with the antique look.
Reminds me of so many fairy tales... So distinctly German!
@mauritius: The place feels extremely German - a bit like a medieval fairy-tale. In some towns, the window boxes are full of vivid blooms to celebrate spring and summer.
@heather: It does have a fairy-tale feel. Germany even has a Fairy-Tale Route that connects a number of towns centred on Hameln and the famous tale of the Pied Piper and the rats.
Really wonderful. I love how different houses can be, especially when passing borders between countries!
I cannot even imagine what it must take to maintain these houses. They are exquisite but every time I look at them I think about having to paint all those wooden boards in a contrasting color by hand.
@lifecruiser: The half-timbered housing is amongst my favourites.
@barbara: I never thought about the painting. A number of German houses show both the original date and the date of the last painting.
