Photo of the Week: Cotopaxi (Ecuador)

Photographed almost a decade ago, Cotopaxi cuts an impressive figure at sunset in darkening conditions. Ironically it was covered in cloud nearly all day but the clouds lifted just as the last vestiges of sunshine lit this Ecuadorian giant. Still an active volcano, it stands just under an imposing 6000 metres with a rough road that runs to an overnight hut (mainly for climbers) at 4600 metres.

Things To Do on raveable

Nice shot! I've never been to South America, though I hope to remedy that before I get too old and creaky to hike up the Andes. In the meanwhile, I'm thoroughly enjoying virtual traveling via blogs like yours. Thanks! :oD

@sherry: It called mine - I was so disappointed when it was hidden in cloud all day to be treated to this as it was getting dark.

@smorg: I'd really encourage you to get to South America - so many treasures to visit and experience (Machu Picchu; Iguazu; Rio; and much much more...)

@seka aleksic: put it on your "bucket list" and make an effort to get to Ecuador

@Barbara: Thank you - a majestic sight

You've reminded me of the time I spent in Ecuador 3 years ago now in the Avenue of the Volcanoes

@heather: The Andes have some spectacular mountains, like Cotapaxi.

@Igracke: Thank you. It is probably more than 10 years old thinking about it - maybe 12 - with the photo scanned from film.
